About Us

Dr. Lewis spent 15 years working in typical physical therapy clinics, and he noticed a trend, patients were often the least important part of a “successful” clinic. He decided to start a small, niche clinic where the patient is the only priority. He makes it a rule to work exclusively with every patient and fix the current and underlying problem in order to return his patients to a healthier life. Dr. Lewis was born in a small town outside of Chapel Hill, NC and raised in Mesa, AZ. When he is not working, Dr. Lewis enjoys playing basketball, rooting for his home town team, UNC Tarheels (GO HEELS!) and ASU SunDevils, and spending time with his wife and playing with their 6 children. He is also an avid recreational cyclist.

Experience

Dr. John A. Lewis, DPT has been in outpatient practice for 15 years, and has seen all manner of injuries. He is adept at post surgical, pre surgical orthopedic (arms, legs, back and neck), accident, worker’s comp (including functional capacity evaluations), vestibular and balance rehab, temporomandibular joint TMJ (dysfunction), headaches, Parkinson’s, and he is certified in ASTYM (an instrument assisted treatment technique). Dr. Lewis has several years of experience as a clinical instructor to doctorate students and Physical Therapist’ Assistant (PTA) students, as well as a professor of PTA at Pima Medical Institute. If you have an injury or disease that requires physical therapy, Dr. Lewis has most likely treated it and can help you get back to better.

Education

Dr. John A Lewis, DPT graduated from A.T. Still University in Mesa, AZ with a Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree in 2004. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and Physical Education from ASU in 1999.

Neck and Back Rehab

Back and neck are the most common injuries to occur, whether from a car accident, a fall, chronic issues, or lifting injuries. Dr. Lewis, having been through therapy for his neck prior to becoming a physical therapist, has studied rehabilitation for these types of injuries extensively. Dr. Lewis will evaluate the root cause of your symptoms. Often, a back or neck injury will manifest in other areas like your arms and legs. Dr. Lewis will complete a course to get rid of symptoms and fix the underlying cause in order for you to return to your full life after treatment. He utilizes several manual techniques, including massage, stretching, joint mobilizations (maneuvering the bones), and other techniques, exercises, and home exercises to get you back on your feet and living your best life.

Post-op and Pre-op Rehab

An injury to your extremities can be very limiting, whether it be to an arm, a leg, your back or neck, it can severely hinder your ability to live your life. Dr. Lewis has extensive knowledge in these types of injuries, having worked with an orthopedic surgeon and having worked closely with several in the area. When you get injured and a surgery is required, regardless of the body part, you will most likely require Physical Therapy after the surgery. There are also examples of needing therapy to prepare your body for a surgery. For example, often times with a back injury (like a herniated disk), a surgeon will require you to get therapy to strengthen your core muscles so that your back can handle the surgery. Also, athletes who get injured while playing often require some therapy prior to surgical interventions because it has been shown to get the athlete back to the game quicker if they are worked in Physical Therapy to prepare for a surgery.

Work Related Injuries

Dr. Lewis works with your insurance company (worker’s comp or individual) for a return to your job safely and quickly. Included with your rehabilitation from an injury, is an activity called work conditioning and another called work hardening, which prepares you for a return to full duty work through a series of simulated work activities during your time in physical therapy, as well as correcting posture and techniques to reduce the risk of re-injury.

Vestibular / Vertigo / Balance

There are 5 components of balance: Proprioception (touch your finger to your nose with your eyes closed), Reflexes (in the back), Inner Ear (position of your head in space), Vision, and Lower Brain Functions (brain stem, etc.). Each of those can contribute to balance issues. Whatever the cause, Dr. Lewis can work towards you having less symptoms and live a dizzy free life.

Functional Capacity Evaluations

If you are injured and need to prove (or find out if) you can return to work, a functional capacity evaluation (called FCE) is an extensive test to determine your ability to work (your specific job or any job) which will be specifically tailored to your needs according to information you provide in regards to your work environment.

Foot and Ankle

An injury to the foot and ankle can affect your walking (called gait), which can, in turn, affect your back, hips and knees. An extensive evaluation can determine the root cause of ankle and foot pain, if it was not a direct result of an injury. After the evaluation, Dr. Lewis will treat you with a “whole body approach” to get rid of any direct and indirect limitations that are a result of your foot and ankle pain.

Sports Injuries

Injuries in sports are, unfortunately, a price of the game. Whether you are a high school, college, professional athlete, still going strong with club level sports, or a weekend warrior, Dr. Lewis will do everything in his power to get you back out there doing what you love. He can get you from the initial injury recovery (call acute phase), to return to normal biomechanics (sub acute) and even through to your return to the field (court, pitch, etc.)

ASTYM

A service of utilizing tools to assist in the recovery from injury. It has years of research behind the practice and can be applied to almost any orthopedic condition, including post surgical. Dr. Lewis uses these tools for several types of orthopedic injuries, but if you would like to receive instrument assisted therapy, ask for it by name.

Liens

Dr. Lewis works with accident insurance claims, allowing for lawyers to direct payment for services rendered. If you have a lawyer and wish to see Physical Therapy, ask them about the Lien program and how we can help your road to recovery.
